In the second half of the nineteenth century, the slate industry moved from
the hinterland of Lavagna to Val Fontanabuona, which remains the mining
and production centre.
In this area slate is extracted from mines, some of which extend underground
for a remarkable distance. The main difference between slate and other types
of mine is that the goal is not just to find a vein, but to extract the
finest blocks from it. Some mines are so spectacular they have been opened
to tourists.
